Successful Student: Tip #1

Looking for a way to talk to your child about school without posing the usual, “What did you do at school today?” and getting no response?

Try one of these: On the ride home from school or before ending dinner, ask your child to do a DLIQ. You could say something like: “Before we get out of the car/clear the table, tell me something you Did at school today—something you Learned, something Interesting that happened and a Question you still have.” OR

“Your ticket out of the car/away from the table is a 3,2,1. Tell me 3 things you did today, 2 things you learned and 1 thing you want to improve.”

You don’t have to do it every day, but it’s good for our children to learn how to     reflect and communicate.

Let me know if you try it and how it goes!

Successful Student Tip #2

Have you ever talked to your child about what he/she would like to be when he/she grows up? Have that conversation every once in awhile. Encourage your child to think about life beyond school and to know that learning how to be a successful student now will give them the tools for learning in the future.

*Is your child keeping up with his/her binder and agenda? Some students are starting to leave them at home. This makes it very difficult to write notes and refer to them for studying.

It’s the beginning of a new 9 week quarter. Encourage your child to do their best each day. They all have great potential. Let’s keep reminding them!
