ORGANIZING the BINDER

Here are some possibilities for setting up the classroom binder. Each binder section should reflect the way you want to have your class organized & the types of work your students do. Some sample organizational tools are included to give you a glimpse of how you could format your own informational sheets.

NOTEBOOK Information Sheet – for Parents & Students

How would you like…
  • No more wrinkled papers in the bottom of the backpack!
  • No more lost school notes, lost homework, lost classroom notes!
  • No more missing lunch money, book order money, or study trip money!
  • No more looking all over the house to find paper to write the teacher a note!

EVERYTHING a student & parent needs is in one notebook!

Binder Sections & How to Use Them:

Section
How to Use Section
Important Info Pocket
The left-hand pocket of the binder is reserved for papers that need to come home immediately for you to see (including such papers as: reminders of meetings, sign-ups, etc.) Please send them back, as soon as possible, as appropriate.

Zippered Pouch
This pouch is used to transfer money back & forth to school, such as lunch money, checks for book orders, study trip money, etc. There is also room to keep an extra sharpened pencil or two & a pen to write notes to the teacher!

School Agenda
Each week, an agenda will be issued in order to keep track of daily assignments. We will fill this out each afternoon AS A CLASS. All students are required to write everything down even if it’s finished.
At the bottom of the “daily homework section”, a child’s behavior for the day may also be noted. Please discuss these issues with your child & if there are any further questions, let me know in the parent communication section of the binder.
Tonight’s Work Folder
The left-hand pocket of this folder contains any work that will need to be completed at home. Unless otherwise noted, all homework is due the NEXT school day. Students who are absent have the same number of days missed to make up the homework. In special circumstances, please let me know & we’ll make accommodations.

Homework is considered practice & is not graded in the same way as tests or graded class work.
·          If students complete work to the best of their ability, they will receive a check in the grade book worth ______pts.
·          If the work is turned in late or is not completely finished, they will receive a check-minus, worth _____pts.
·          Homework that’s not done receives 0 pts.

These homework points are averaged together as part of the final grade at the end of the marking period.

Completed Work Folder
This folder is for work that has been completed in class & is no longer needed at school. Please remove papers from this folder, promptly! You may want to keep them at home as reference, but there will be no need to send them back to school.

Graded work will not be sent home in this folder on a nightly basis! Those papers will be sent home in the “Friday Folder”. If you have questions about a grade, please write the question in the paper & return it to school in the binder, on Monday.

Spelling Folder
This folder will hold your child’s spelling list for the week along with any work we are currently using to study for the words/vocabulary. Use this information as a reference for studying for the test.

Vocabulary
Vocabulary Cards will be housed in this pocket. Again, these papers will be used daily in class & should be only used for reference/studying at home. Please put them back in the pocket before returning to school!
Parent/Teacher Communication
Tab
This section of blank paper is for notes between you & me. Please date each note that you write, & I will do the same. I will ask students, each morning, if they have notes for me in their binders, so please, only use the binders to send notes! If I have a message for you, I will mention it to you on your child’s weekly agenda. (i.e: “Check P/T Folder for message.”)

Please leave any notes that we may write in this section so that we can both look back & remember any communications we may have had.

Monthly Calendar Sleeve
This plastic sleeve will hold a monthly calendar with upcoming activities, project due dates, & other information.

OPTIONAL IDEA:
Each week, we will have a “Student of the Week” that will be listed on the calendar, as well. When it’s your child’s turn, he/she will be required to bring in some pictures/artifacts that represent him/her. Maybe a favorite toy or special memento, & anything else that he/she would like to share with the class. We will display the items for all to see & discuss them throughout the week. This is a required activity of all students, & will be used as part of the social studies grade. I hope that during the course of the year we will get to know not only our peers, but other members of our classroom family.

During your child’s “special week”, he/she may invite a friend or family member to read a picture book to our class. This is an OPTIONAL activity! If it’s something appealing to you, let us know a good day & time during the week & we will arrange something. Children get so excited about having a special person come to the room to share a story with the class!

Our Schedule Sleeve
Our schedule will be housed here. Please use it as a reminder of gym & library days.

We realize that dental & doctor appointments are sometimes unavoidable during the school day, so it might help to consult our class schedule before making these appointments. If possible, try choosing a time of the day when new concepts would not be introduced!

Breakfast & Lunch Menus
Although it would be tempting to place the menu on the refrigerator, please keep the menu in the binder! It will come home every day & you will always know where to look for the answer to the question, “What’s for lunch tomorrow?” If your child wants lunch, then money can be placed in the zippered pouch.

References
Consult papers in this pocket for special helps: upcoming project details, multiplication chart, explanations of confusing math skills, reading strategies to use with your child, behavior chart, etc.

Please take good care of your binder as it will be used every day, all year long!

To help cover the expenses incurred in assembling the binders, please send in $_____ as soon as possible. If this will cause a problem for your family, please let me know & we can make accommodations.

Thank you!

DAILY, WEEKLY, or MONTHLY calendars should be part of the binder. These include: the LUNCH CALENDAR, a monthly SCHOOL CALENDAR, a daily or weekly CLASSROOM CALENDAR or AGENDA. A good place to store these would be in individual plastic sleeves toward the back of the binder. As one calendar is completed, it can be replaced with a new one.
A sample calendar is shown, below. A print-friendly version is available, also.
