The purpose of this lesson is two-fold:
1. First, to set the stage for the upcoming unit by having a variety of resources related to the two-month unit, available for you to view and access online.
2. Second, to introduce you to Alaska, a state you may be unfamiliar with, but which is the setting for many of Gary Paulsen's adventure books as well as his autobiography, Woodsong, which we will read during the next month.
A number of pictures have been uploaded to Lesson # 1 so you can purposeful view and analyze the images. A note-taking sheet will be available for you with some prompts suggesting what you should look for in the pictures. By doing this before we read Woodsong and follow the Iditarod Sled Dog Race, you will be able to use your new knowledge to make connections to the book’s content and the history-based March race.

A picture is worth a thousand words! What do you see when you look at photos? How do you feel? What questions do they make you ask? The images you will be looking at in this lesson will help you connect with people, places, and things that may be totally unfamiliar to you. As a way to help you learn how to analyze images, whether in website, a book, or elsewhere, note-taking sheets have been developed to help you analyze photos more critically. Choose the one that works the best for you, or ask your teacher which you should use.

View the images, match the words to the images, then write a brief summary describing what you learned about Alaska and the Iditarod from viewing these images. Don't worry about whether you are right or wrong! This is to describe your thinking, NOW!
